Exiting new Fibery Endeavors

The fiber community continues to launch new creative (and educational) content – two projects that I’m aware of that I’m especially interested in are: Ply and the Great White Bale.

Ply
is a new print magazine for handspinners – i’m an entirely self taught spinner, mostly by experimentation but also via occasional youtube tutorials – I know the basics as far as terminology goes, but I’m not a terribly technical spinner – I generally just have a seat at my wheel with a basic idea of what it is I want to spin, and off I go – I’m able to spin a consistent yarn, and at this point, I tend towards spinning finer singles – I used to have such a hard time spinning fine, but now I find myself wishing for a bulkier yarn.  I can spin a thicker yarn, but it requires more mindfulness on my part – I suspect I should be able to make this easier on myself if I take some time to learn a bit more about the technical aspects of spinning…that and it would get me spinning on my traditional wheel again. 🙂  In addition to appealing to the technical side of me, I think Ply will also appeal to the aspiring anthropologist in me, as it looks like it will discuss spinning history, while also documenting the present.  Ply isn’t in print yet, they are hoping to have their first issue this summer, and I can’t wait!

As for the Great White Bale, I haven’t yet joined, but I continue to contemplate it.  I’ve sourced yarns for SpritelyGoods before, working with importers and even with a mill to have a yarn created for me.  It would be fascinating to follow the progress of the great white bale of wool as it progresses through the processing – from scouring and fiber prep through the spinning process and then the dyeing process.  If you’ve a yarnie in your life, they might enjoy reading along on that adventure!
